In a Sunday Sermon offered at All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, CA, Rev. angel shares a little-known and surprising piece of history in the 400th year anniversary of African people's being enslaved in what became the United States.
In the sermon, she unpacks how "Learning The Ways of The System" was ingrained even in those of us unloved and unmet by the systems that seek to oppress some as it privileges others. It is a foreshadowing for each of us that have learned to be complicit even as we intend to walk the path of Jesus, or otherwise be adherents of the faith, compassion, and love.
As Rev. angel points to —rather than hide from the truth of difficult histories and how they play out in our own reality—to learn how it came to be and how it happens within us is the beginning of setting oneself free.
