kyusu “kyoo-soo” is the generic name for Japanese teapots, but the word is most often associated with the sidehandle version. really there are three types: side (yokode), top (uwade) and this most-familiar back (ushirode) style based of the classic design developed in China (but for very annoying colonization reasons, associated with the British). i bought this one becuase i love the kannyu “crackle glaze” the forms because of heat differences between glaze and clay. i generally don’t use it for Japanese tea at all, but because it’s glazed, use it to taste teas unaltered by the properties of clays. the cup by Petr Novák has an Ice Crackle glaze.
